Profile | Index for MERRILL |
Florence Emma Merrill was born in 1870 in St.Johns Wood Terrace, Marylebone, Middlesex, the only daughter of James and Rhoda Merrill.
The census of 1871 shows Florence and her brother Thomas living with their parents at 8 Portland Place in Marylebone. At the next census in 1881 they are at 24 New Street in Marylebone.
The family was still together but at 41 Townsend Road in St.Johns Wood Terrace when the census of 1891 was taken and by now Florence was working as a Milliner. All is the same at the time of the census in 1901.
After their Banns had been read on 26 November and 5 December 1905, Florence married Ernest Smith on 24 December that year at St.Peters church in Islington. Their address was given as 15 Hanover Street in Islington but no occupation was shown for Emma. She seems to have been concerned about being more than ten years older than Ernest as she gave her age as 28 on the marriage certificate whereas she was actually thirty four.
The census of 1911 shows them living at 48 Whiskin Street, Clerkenwell in Middlesex and Emma had reverted to working as a milliner. They had no children at that time. Florence continued the charade about her age, stating it as being 34 and hiding the fact that she was actually 41.
Thereafter nothing is known of either Ernest or Florence.
