Peter Lovelady was born in Ince Blundell, Lancashire on 7 January 1830. He was the sixth of the twelve children of Stephen and Ellen Lovelady. By the time the census of 1841 was taken, the family had moved to Turnpike Road in Lydiate and they had a young female servant.
The census of 1851 shows that Peter had left the family home and was working as a carter in Liverpool. He was one of three lodgers at the family home of Mr and Mrs Hasslam at 31 Upper Harringtom Street in Toxteth Park. One of the other lodgers was Joseph Rimmer.
In 1858, Peter married Jane Stopforth, a daughter of William and Alice Stopforth of Haskayne, Down Holland in Lancashire. Peter and Jane were living in Lydiate when their first child Alice was born on 21 May 1860 then followed by son Stephen in 1861 as recorded in the 1861 census. At that the family were living on the Liverpool and Preston turnpike road and Peter was employed as a Farm Baliff.
The family continued to grow with the arrival of Ellen in 1863, William in 1865, Peter in 1867, Jane in 1869 and Mary in 1870. The census of 1871 shows the family still living on Turnpike Road in Lydiate. Peter was now farming 60 acres on his own account, employing five men and a boy.
Four more daughters were added to the family, Catharine about 1872, Annie about 1874, Margaret about 1877 and Gertrude about 1880. The family were still in Turnpike Road when the census was taken in 1881 and there were two servants in the house. Peter was farming 50 acres and employing four men.
The 1891 census gives the full address of Highway Farm, Old Turnpike Road, Lydiate, Lancashire and that, presumably, is where the family had lived Peter and Jane were married. That census just shows Peter as a Farmer. There were also three of Peter's employed labourers living on the premises.
Peter died in 1900 and the death was registered in the Ormskirk district. His wife Jane survived until 1919.
