Joseph Leavey was born about 1830 in Mortimer, Hampshire, son of William and Jane Leavey. The 1841 census shows the family living at the White Lion public house in Monk Sherborne where his father was the publican.
The 1851 census shows Joseph as a Journeyman blacksmith living in Shaw cum Donnington in Berkshire and living in the household of William Dearing as a servant.
Joseph married Mary Ann Bond in the Reading area in December 1853. Daughter Laura Jane was born in 1854, Alice Rebecca in 1858 and Mary Ann in 1859. Son Henry James was born in 1860. By the time the census of 1861 was taken, Joseph was a blacksmith on his own account and living at 84 Brimpton Street in Brimpton, Berkshire. Son Charles was born in 1862 and daughter Helen Octavia in 1866 followed by Joseph William in 1869 and David Undecimus in 1870. The 1869 Post Office directory for Brimpton lists Joseph as a blacksmith.
The 1871 census lists Joseph and family as at the Smith and Wheelwright shop in Cottage Street in Aldermaston, Berkshire. In the house with Joseph and his wife Mary are children Laura, Mary and Joseph, also his wife's mother and William Price who was working for Joseph.
Joseph died on 11 May 1875. His wife Mary lived until 1905.
