Edward James Lane was born to Draper and Hannah Lane in Kennington, Surrey on 8 June 1878. He was baptised at St.Saviour's church in Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill, Surrey on 4 August the same year.
The 1881 census shows Edward with his family lodging at 15 Elliott Road in Lambeth and there also being an old lady, Emily Lacock, lodging with them. Edward started at Heber Road School in East Dulwich on 24 August 1885 as recorded in the school admissions register. His forenames were actually transposed on the register as James Edward. The census of 1891 records that Edward was still living with his parents and brothers David and James but they had moved to 34 Landcroft Road in East Dulwich, Surrey. When the census was taken in 1901, they were still in Landcroft Road but at number 22. Edward was employed as a company clerk. His brother David had left home by then and there were two boarders living at the house at that time.
On 30 September 1902, Edward married Clara Elizabeth Pooley, daughter of Henry and Frances Pooley who also lived in East Dulwich. Daughter Winifred was born in Harlesden in 1903, son Harold in 1905 and Eric in 1908. By the time the census of 1911 was taken, they were living at 89 Minet Avenue in Harlesden. Edward's occupation was recorded as Company Clerk to a gold mining company.
Daughter Edna was born in Harlesden in 1913 and son Victor in 1919. The electoral register of 1923 confirms Edwards address as 89 Minet Avenue and he and his family were still living there when he passed away on 4 April 1924. Probate on his Will was granted to his brother James on 11 June that year.
The photograph shows some typical houses in Minet Avenue but the actual address numbers are not known.
