Edith Emily Harding was born in Dringhouses, Yorkshire on 21 September 1873 and was baptised at St.Edwards church in Dringhouses on 2 November the same year.

The 1881 census shows that the family living Mill Street, Norton near Malton. They were at the same address when the census of 1891 was taken and Lily is listed as being a dressmaker. At that time she had five sisters but her two brothers had passed away.

Edith married locally born raiway clerk James Sydney Botterill in Malton in 1897. Their daughter Marjorie was born in Malton in 1898 and son Eric Sydney in 1900. The 1901 census shows that the family had moved to 5 Holder Street in Redcar. It seems likely that her husband was transferred to various locations requiring the family to move home accordingly.

By the time that the 1911 census was taken, the family were living at 188 Bishopthorpe Road in York. A photograph of that road is seen here. Their son Eric passed away the same year.

When the 1939 register was taken, Edith and James were living at 73 Moorgate in the city of York. Edith was widowed in 1944. In 1951 she was living in a bungalow at 40 Severus Avenue in Acomb, York. She passed away on 18 April and left a will for which probate was granted at York on 7 July to her son-in-law Wilfred Lace.
