Gertrude Ellen Harding was the third of the eight chidren of Ernest and Charlotte Harding and was born in Dringhouses, Yorkshire on 28 October 1870. She was baptised at St.Edwards church in Dringhouses on 12 November the same year. The 1871 census shows Gertrude with her family living in Dringhouses but her brother Albert is not listed as he had passed away earlier that year.
The census of 1881 shows that the family had moved to Mill Street in Norton. The next census in 1891 shows Gertrude still with her family in Mill Street but that she had by then employment as a dressmaker.
On 11 August 1896, Gertrude married Henry Stockdale Wood in Malton. He was a house painter and decorator who had been born in Norton. In 1898 their son Reginald Stockdale was born. There followed twins Emily and Esmey in 1899 but they died without being registered. The census of 1901 shows the family living at 5 Church Street in Norton. A contemporary photograph of Church Street is shown here on the right but their house has since been demolished and a garege business now exists there.
Son Henry Sturley was born later in 1901 then daughter Florence Emily Esme in 1904 but she died without the death being registered. John was born in 1905 and Gertrude Elizabeth in 1909. The family were still living at 5 Church Street in 1911 when the census was taken. Their youngest child, Margaret Ellen was born in 1912.
The next reference to Gertrude and Henry is in the 1939 register which shows them still living in the same house. Their daughter Margaret is then the only child left at home with them.
Ellen died in Malton Norton and District Hospital on 23 October 1946. In her will she had left £1767 3s 4d. Her husband Henry survived her until 1961.
