Ancestors Profile Index for HARDING

Herman Harding was
born on 1 October 1859 in Harpford, Devon, son of Richard and Anna Harding.

The 1861 census shows Herman with older siblings William, Eliza Jane and Walter with their parents at Bowde near Harpford. By the time the census was taken in 1871, the family had moved a short distance to Newton Poppleford where Herman was employed in the silk factory.

In 1880, Herman's son Herman Henry was born of Emma Parsons shortly before Herman and Emma married in the parish of Harpford on 11 November. The census of 1881 records the couple and their son living with his parents and his siblings in Bridge End in Newton Poppleford. Their son Richard was born there in 1886. Sadly, Emma died two yeas later in 1888.

In the census of 1891, Herman is shown as employed as a waggoner and lodging at 6 Holloway Street in Exeter with widow Emily Dadd and her six year old son George. She was recorded as being a greengrocer. Herman married Emily on 6 August 1894 at the congregational church in Southernhay in Exeter. At that time their address was given as 11 Friars Gate in Exeter. Herman was still employed as a waggoner but Emily had no occupation.

Emily's son George stayed with her and Herman as did Herman's son Richard. Daughter Amy Emily was born to Herman and Emily in Exeter in 1895. The couple were at the same adress at the time of the 1901 census but Herman was now a general labourer.

The 1911 census finds the family 208 Forton Road in Gosport, Hampshire where Herman is a general labourer on government construction work. Children George and Annie are still with them.

Herman's wife Emily passed away in Gosport in 1933 and Herman himself died there in 1936.
