Herman Harding was born in Crawley in Hampshire on 26 November 1846, son of John and Mary Ann Harding who had recently moved up from Core Hill near Sidbury in Devon with their children to join Thomas, George and Ernest who were working nearby in Littleton. He was baptised in Crawley on 27 December the same year and his surname was written as Harden.
The 1851 census shows that they had moved back to Core Hill in Devon, Thomas, George and Ernest remaining where they were. Herman was still in Core Hill when the census was taken in 1861 and listed as working on his father's 30 acre farm.
By 1871, Herman had moved to Hastings in Sussex and the census of that year records him as being the butler in the household of elderly spinster Ann Hill at 18 Eversfield Place.
Herman married Charlotte Robertson in St.James' church in Islington on 31 January 1880. Their address was given as St.James in Holloway, Middlesex. Herman was working as a butler according to the marriage certificate however, by April the next year when the census was taken, Herman was working as a tobacconist and he and Charlotte were living at 30 The Pavement, Lordship Lane in East Dulwich, Camberwell which was most likely a shop premises. The census also recorded the presence of their three month old daughter Lilian who had been born there on 23 December the previous year. The birth of son George was registered in the Westminster district in 1884.
Herman is recorded as having died on 16 October 1885 at 9 Hugh Street, Pimlico, Middlesex, his wife Charlotte being present at the time. She married Henry Miller in 1888 and her two children stayed with her.
