Elizabeth Harding was born to John and Charity Harding in Sidbury, Devon in 1830 and was baptised there on 20 July. The 1841 census shows Elizabeth with some of her family in Church Row in Sidbury. Her father and brother Thomas were recorded in nearby Core Hill when the census was taken probably due to their work. Brother James is shown as away working in Cotford. The census of 1851 shows Elizabeth with her parents and three siblings in Core Hill.
It is presumed that Elizabeth married James Podbury of Sidbury in about 1852 although no record of their marriage has been found. Their son John Henry was born in Core Hill on 17 March 1854. Son Thomas Augustus was born in Harpford on 6 June 1855. Both birth certificates indicate that their parents were properly married.
Sadly, her husband James died on 19 February 1857, having been unwell with anascara for the preceeding ten years. The 1861 census shows that Elizabeth had placed her children with their grandparents John and Mary Ann Harding at Core Hill and had taken work as a ladies maid in Dunsford on the Exeter side of Dartmoor.
Elizabeth can not be found in the census of 1871 but in 1881 she is recorded as housekeeper to retiree Henry Bourne and his wife at Wood Bine Cottage in Blackmore, Ongar, Essex. According to the census of 1891 Elizabeth was living with her brother Harvey and his family at 168 Wellfield Road in Streatham, Surrey. Her occupation at the time was listed as being a ladies maid.
Elizabeth passed away in 1897 and her death was recorded in the Wandsworth registration district.
