Ancestors Profile Index for HARDING

Richard Harding was born in the village of
Harpford in Devon and baptised there on 22 August 1820. He was son of John and Charity Harding, the third of their three known children. The census of 1841 shows Richard in Bowde employed as an agricultural labourer.

On 13 November 1845 he married Anna Prue in the parish church at Payhembury, Devon. It appears that she was actually known as Hannah. At that time they were shown as living in Lower Cheriton where John was a labourer and Hannah was a domestic servant. Son John was born in Payhembury in 1846 but the family had moved to Southerton back near Harpford by the time son Henry was born around 1858 and William in 1850. The 1851 census records the family as living in Southertown, now known as Southerton, near Harpford.

Daughter Louisa was born in 1855, Eliza Jane around 1856, son Walter around 1858 and Herman in 1859. The census of 1861 shows the family in Burrow in Harpford. Daughter Mary Ann was born in 1862 in Harpford then the family moved to Newton Poppleford where daughter Lydia was born in 1868. The family were still in Newton Poppleford when the census of 1871 was taken but by the time the 1881 census was taken, they had moved to Bridgend on the outskirts of the town. Son Herman had married and he and his wife Emma and their son Herman Henry were also living with the family.

It is believed that Richard died in 1890 although the records are not clear. Hannah took work as a washerwoman and was looking after her son William and grandson Henry when she passed away in 1892.
