Arthur Philip Greatorex was born at 103 Tooting Bec Road, Streatham, Surrey on 27 October 1909, the first of the two children of Hubert and Annie Greatorex. Arthur had been given the same fornames as his maternal grandfather, Arthur Philip Sowden. The
census of 1911 shows Arthur and his parents living with his maternal grandparents at 28 Stapleton Road, Upper Tooting.

The 1913 electoral register shows the family, living in an unfurnished ground floor flat at 3 Nimrod Road, Streatham. The building was owned by Harold Fairweather. In about 1916, Arthur's father abandoned his family and set up home with another woman. The Electoral Registers of 1931, 1932 and 1933 show Arthur living at 16 Clairview Road in Streatham with his grandfather Arthur and step-grandmother Maud.

Arthur married his cousin Nancy Sylvia Fairweather in Streatham on 9 September 1933. His Best Man was friend Archie Smith. Nancy's sister Vera was a bridesmaid. Arthur and Nancy moved to 1 Brampton Road in Huntingdon where Arthur was employed as a Technical Chemist at the canning factory of Chivers & Sons. Son Brian was born in Huntingdon in 1935 and the family lived there until the death of Nancy in 1951.

Three years later, Arthur married childhood friend Marie Agnes Smith, sister of Archie Smith who had been Best Man at his first wedding. Witnesses at the ceremony at Otford Parish Church in Kent were Harvey Smith, brother of Marie and Archie, and C.Fairweather. At the time of the wedding, Arthur was living at Hyde House, Darkes Lane in Potters Bar and was employed as a Safety Officer. Marie had been living at 19 Hale Lane in Otford. The Electoral Register of 1954 shows Arthur living with his employer Charles Fairweather at Hyde House.

By 1959, Arthur was working as Personnel Manager for Fairweather

Moved to Essex and mother-in-law lived with them alternately with Archie Smith and family.

Died in 1984 and was cremated at Colchester Crematorium,
