Alice Gower was born in Eynsford, Kent about 1833. She was the youngest of the nine children of Edward and Caroline Gower.
The census of 1841 shows the family living in Eynsford as did the census of 1851.
On 7 September 1857, Alice married William Smith in Shoreham. The witnesses to the signing of the register were William and Sarah Couchman, friends of William and who would be their next door neighbours in Eynsford Street in Eynsford.
In 1861, the census records that Alice and William were still living in Eynsford Street and that William and Sarah Couchman were still next door. Both Williams were listed as farm labourers and may well have worked together.
Alice and William had no children then he died in Shoreham on 15 March 1864 having suffered a fever for three weeks. In 1868, Alice married Elijah Lawrence who was an agricultural labourer as had been William. The census of 1871 shows Alice and Elijah living in a cottage on Sevenoaks Road in Eynsford. By 1881 they had moved to Bridge Road and by 1901 they were living in Riverside Cottage in Eynsford by which time Elijah had ceased working.
Alice and Elijah were childless. She passed away in 1905 having lived in Eynsford her entire life.
