Vehicles Biography

Hillman Minx
Registration number PKX 390

In 1955 Doady inherited her father's car which was this light green Hillman Minx. She had not driven since before the war and was a bit nervous about starting again, however, she persevered and after several excursions, after each of which she was terrified and swore she would never drive again, she had regained her confidence. There was one notable occasion after she had been driving again for a short while that she took the children for a day out at Cheddar caves. Going along the Basingstoke by-pass, the children were encouraging her to go as fast as she could and she did just that when, at about 80 miles per hour the fan belt broke with a bang. Luckily there was a garage nearby where it was fixed but the remainder of the journey was slow and there was no conversation.

When the children reached their teens, they learned to drive this car and would take it round the trees in the woods and managed this without damage to the vehicle.

In 1957, the Suez crisis triggerred the issue of petrol ration books and Doady had one for this car.
