Emma Folker was born in Westminster on 5 January 1833, the seventh and last child of Samuel Shepherd and Susannah Folker. Her father passed away in 1837 when she was just four years old.

The whereabouts of Emma's family in 1841 have not been found in the census of that year. However, in 1851, she was a pupil in a seminary at 5 Bath Terrace, Instow in Devon, run by a lady called Mary Faulkener.

The census of 1861 shows Emma living at 92 Holywell Street in Oxford. this was the home of her uncle William Thorp and it is likely that she moved there with her mother after her father passed away. She was not shown as having an occupation at that time.

In 1871, Emma was still living in Oxford with her mother, but was by now resident at 3 Wellington Street, and was recorded as a teacher. The move of house was probably brought about by the death of her uncle in 1869.

Emma's mother passed away in 1875, after which it seems that Emma went to live with her brother Alfred Hanley Folker and his son Horace in Guildford. The census of 1881 shows her at their address at Lea Pale Road in the district of Stoke. She is listed as being of independent means.

Horace separated from his father, and in 1891 Emma was living with Alfred at Strasburg Villa in Martyr Road, Guildford. She was still at that address when she passed away on 4 March 1899, having suffered from bronchitis for nine days. Horace was present at her death and made the registration. As Emma had not made her will, Letters of Administration were signed by her brother William Henry Folker.
