Launched in 1889, Teutonic started working the Liverpool to New York route via Queenstown the same year, and was capable of carrying almost 1500 passengers. In 1891 it won the Blue Ribband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic. In 1898, the year that William Henry Folker was a passenger, it was involved in a collision with a transporter ship in New York harbour.
