1829 Line-engraving on paper
Held in the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
The engraving shows how Constable’s canvas would have looked before he made alterations.
More of the boat on the left was visible and the dog staring outwards was once watching
a fisherman smoking a pipe. On the right is the tiny profile of the Brighton-Dieppe
steam ferry which is absent from the painting. The engraving was probably aimed at tourists
in Brighton, its co-publisher, Mr. Folker, coming from the town.
Examples are held in the Tate Gallery and the Cortauld Institute of Art Gallery, London.
