Biography of Sydney Gustave FIFOOT

Sydney Gustave Fifoot was born about 1852 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, one of the ten children of William and Jane Fifoot. In 1861 the family were living at 8 Crichton Steet in cardiff and by 1871 they had moved to number 32.
Sydney started work as a Shipbrokers Clerk. In 1875 he married Maria M Trevor, also of Cardiff. Son Charles Trevor was born in 1877 and Sydney Carleton in 1880. The census of 1881 shows the family living in Wilton House in the St.John's area of Cardiff where they employed one servant. Sydney had progressed to being a Colliery Agent.
Son Louis J was born in 1882 and Harold Victor in 1891. By then the family were living at 81 Stacey Road in Roath outside Cardiff. The household was still served by a housemaid but additionally had a nurse. Son Cecil Herbert Stuart was born in 1899.
By 1901 the family had moved to Penarth where they lived in Ingledene in Victoria Road. Sydney's sister-in-law Emily Christopherson was with them and they now had a cook as well as the housemaid. Sydney was now Agent to a steel works in addition to the colliery. There was a telephone in the house.
The census of 1911 shows that Sydney had risen to be Colliery Manager. The family had recently moved to Sulley House in Sawbridge near Cardiff. Sons Carleton, Louis and Harold were at home as was Sydney's twelve year old Niece Emily Beryl, daughter of his brother Edgar. The servants comprised a Housekeeper, a Nurse and two Housemaids.
Contemporary telephone directories show that Sydney and Maria had moved to a property called Hillside in Sully by 1921 where their telephone number was Sully 8.
In 1936, Sydney and Maria were living at 14a Surrey Road South in the Westbourne area of Bournemouth. Maria passed away there in 1937. Sydney returned to South Wales soon after and lived at 25 Victoria Road in Penarth where he died in 1942. His executors were sons Carleton and Louis to his estate which amounted to £2,089 3s.
