Mary Ann Davis was born out of wedlock in Shoreham, Kent in 1832 and was baptised there on 6 October the same year. Her father was probably James Smith who later married her mother, therefore she was the eldest of their eleven children.

The census of 1841 shows Mary Ann included in the family who were then living in the Pig and Whistle public house in Shoreham where James was the publican. Her surname was recorded as Smith indicating that she was accepted as part of the family.

Mary married William Flewin in Farningham on 15 October 1850. James Smith was recorded in the register as her father. The 1851 census shows Mary Ann and William living in Farningham village.

Son Henry Wiliam was born in 1851 then daughters Rosina in 1854 and Louisa Annie in 1857. The 1861 census records tha family living at Elizabeth Place in Farningham. Son Albert Ernest was born in 1862 and Alfred Ernest in 1866 then, just a few months later, their father William died in an accident in a well.

Mary herself became ill and died of cancer on 11 August 1868. She was buried in Farningham churchyard on 16 August. Her children were consequently left orphaned. Henry joined the army whilst the girls were placed in Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol and Albert and Arthur in the Home for Litle Boys in Farningham.
