Elsie Crickmore was
born on 13 September 1905 at 30 Thorpe Road, Kingston in Surrey, the youngest of the eight children of Robert and Ada Crickmore.

The census of 1911 shows the family living at Aurora in Muster Road in Teddington, Surrey. By the time the next census was taken in 1921, they hd moved to 64 Iron Mill Lane in Crayford, Kent, where her father and brother Harold worked at Vickers Ltd.

Elsie married sailor William Leonard Smith at Crayford on 10 March 1937. The couple lived initially with Bill's family at The Bungalow in Lowfield Road, Dartford as confirmed in the 1939 Register. Bill was not listed as he was stationed at Chatham Barracks. The register also notes that Elsie was working as a factoryhand at Vickers works. Daughter Barbara was born at The Bungalow in 1940.

Son Roderick was born in Chatham in 1951. Elsie's husband Bill died in 1974 but thereafter nothing is known of her until her death. She died at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on 23 January 1995, having suffered a myocardial infarction. She had been living at 17 Fountain Court in Boxhill Road, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which was a flat in a retirement complex.
