Robert James Crickmore was born in Southwold, Suffolk on 24 July 1864, the first of the seven children of Robert and Phoebe Crickmore.
The census of 1871 shows the family living in East Green in Southwold. On 27 July 1877, Robert was indentured to J Jackman of Lowestoft as an apprentice for seven years in the Merchant Navy as a fisherman. However, that was cancelled on 6 November the same year.
By 1881, Robert had left home and was employed as a stable boy at Henstead Hall in Beccles, Suffolk, the home of Colonel and Mrs Chester.
Robert was in Brightlingsea in Essex when, in 1887, he married Ada Clara March, daughter of George and Susan March. They started to raise a family whilst in Brightlingsea and had six children there up until 1902.
Robert has not been found on the census returns of 1891 and 1901 although his wife Ada is recorded as living with the children at 64 Hurst Green in Brightlingsea, Essex. A possibility is that Robert was a sailor and was at sea. However, daughter Ida was born in Kingston, Surrey in 1904. The family address is recorded as 30 Thorpe Road in Kingston, Surrey on the birth certificate of daughter Elsie the following year. Robert was employed as a Club Caretaker. The Electoral Register of 1906 and the two following years show Robert at the same address.
The Electoral Register of 1910 shows that Robert had moved to live at 120 Munster Road in Teddington, Surrey. At the census taken in 1911, Robert and his family are at the same address but the house is called Aurora. He was then employed as a Steward in a sailing club.
Robert became a Freemason, joining the Noel Lodge in Kingston on 24 September 1913 but he appears to have been excluded within a year or so. He and his family are still living at 120 Munster Road according to the census of 1921 but he now works at Vickers Ltd. factory in Dartford as a Progresser. His son Harold is also employed at the factory.
The marriage certificate of daughter Elsie in 1937 shows Robert's occupation as a storekeeper. The Electoral Registers of 1937 and 1939 show the family home address as 96 Crayford Way in Crayford, Kent. The 1939 register repeats that but also shows that with Robert and his wife Ada are their sons George and Harold and also daughter Elsie, her husband being away in the Navy.
Nothing more is known of Robert until his death on 28 September 1951 which was registered in the Dartford registration district. He was cremated at Sothwark Cemetery on 3 October.
