Frederick John Clark was born in Guildford in 1890 and was baptised in Holy Trinity church on 28 February. He was the youngest of the three children of Thomas and Eliza Clark. He was not with his parents when the census of 1891 was taken and his name has not been found nor that of his sister Violet. Their mother died in childbirth in 1894. The
1901 census records Frederick at the age of eleven as one of two boarders in the household of Thomas and Louisa Mann at 116 Grafton Road in Sculcoates, Yorkshire.

According to his entry in the Seamen's Register, on 31 August 1906, Frederick started serving as a boy domestic at HMS Pembroke, a naval shore base in Chatham. On 10 October the following year he was promoted to Boy Servant. His character was described as Very good. His characterisics were given at age 18 as height 5'5½", hair dark brown, eyes brown, complection fresh and having a scar on his head. He continued in service at several locations, gaining promotion along the way then was discharged on 8 November 1909 with a good reference as to his character.

No entry for Frederick has been found in the 1911 census. On 13 April 1913, Frederick boarded SS Megantic at Liverpool as an emigrant bound for Canada. His occupation given on the passenger list was Farm Hand and also declared that Frederick had no near relatives.

Frederick found his way to Ontario where he settled. Military documents for Frederick record that he declared his uncle Alfred Henry Folker, brother of his mother Eliza, as next of kin.

On 16 October 1930, he married Elizabeth Agnes Lenhard who had been born in Canada but was of German extraction. The marriage took place in London, Ontario. Frederick gave his occupation as Hospital Attendant in Old Hospital, London, Ontario. Also, he declared on the certificate that he did not know the name of his mother.

Frederick's wife Elizabeth passed away in 1939. He survived until 1970 and was buried in Saint Clements Roman Catholic cemetery in Ontario.
