William Harcourt Bustard was born in 1851 in Malta, probably where his father was serving with the British Army. It is likely that he arrived in England soon afterwrds as the census of 1861 shows him with his sister Mary Ann at the Militia Barracks in Bury St.Edmund's in the care of their uncle George Harcourt. Mary Ann was born in England in 1852 so it is likely that William was back by that time.
William can not be found in the 1871 census but by the time of the 1881, he was an assistant schoolmaster at the Grammar School in Compton Road, Wolverhampton.
On 3 August 1885, William married Emma Furness in Lanhydrock parish church. She had been the Sub-matron in Trebyan girls orphanage in Lanhydrock where her mother was Matron. Son William Hugh Gordon was born the following year, Frank Harcourt in 1888 and Frederick Walter in 1890.
In 1891 William and his family plus two servants were living at 2 West View, Upper Penn, Liesdon, Staffordshire. His occupation was given as Secretary to an Orphanage Asylum. By 1901 the family were living at 134 St.Stephens Road, Upton Park, East Ham, Essex and his occupation was given as Secretary to public companies.
Their address was shown as 283 Katherine Road, Forest Gate, Essex in the 1911. Son Frank was not present on that occasion. William passed away in 1925
