Margaret Barratt was
born at 32 Shepherdess Walk in Hoxton New Town, Middlesex on 16 September 1867. She was one of the ten children of George and Sarah Barratt. The family were still at that address according to the census of 1871 but by 1881 the census showed Margaret being the only child living with her parents at Japan House in Mount Pleasant Road, Hornsey.

Margaret was married to Horace Shepherd Folker on 6 June 1895 at St.Luke's church in Holloway. Margaret's father George and Horace's brother John were witnesses to the ceremony. Margaret's address on the marriage certificate was given as 506 Caledonian Road in Lower Holloway.

Their three children were all born at the family home at Stroud House in Dene Road, East Stoke, Guildford. Leonard Barratt was born on 8 September 1897, Kathleen Margaret on 18 August 1901 and Stuart Shepherd on 14 February 1905. In September that year, Margaret advertised for a nurse to assist in looking after the children. Around 1908, Upon his retirement, Horace and Margaret moved to a house called Wroxham in Sutton, Surrey.

Margaret became unwell and spent time convalescing at Bishops Castle for a month then a further six months at Bower Mount in East Peckham, Kent. Whilst there, she tragically died by drowning in the River Medway on 5 April 1909. An inquest was held at The Rose and Crown Inn on 7 April on which The Free Press carried a report on 16 April. Margaret was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London, leaving a Will.

The following year in her memory, Horace gave Holy Trinity church in Guildford a Baptistry in which a plaque recorded the fact. He endowed for the upkeep of it's lighting and also donated a gift of mosaic paving. He later made a gift towards the rewiring of the baptistry.
