Biography of Maria Louisa BARRATT
[Ref. P.525]
Maria Louisa Barratt was born at 9 Albert Place in Hoxton new Town on 26 December 1862. She was a daughter of George and Sarah Barratt.
The census of 1871 shows Maria with her parents and siblings living at 32 Shepherdess Walk in Hoxton, Middlesex. When the census was taken in 1881, Maria and her sister Harrietta were at 30 and 32 Shepherdess Walk, which was then the home of their brother George William and his family, their parents having moved away to Crouch Hill.
Maria had been living with her parents at Japan House in Crouch Hill when, on 26 April 1883, she married Francis Leon Emilius Pither, an architect from East Barnet. Daughter Edith was born in 1885 and son Harold in 1887.
The census of 1891 shows the family living at 10 Regina Road, Tollington Park, Islington, Middlesex. Also recorded were Francis' widowed mother Sophia and Maria's maiden aunt Maria Peterson. The household had general servant Emily Mary Leadbetter and 15 year old nurse girl Susan Fariner. Daughter Dorothy was born in 1892, then sons Sidney in 1895 and Cecil in 1896. At some point, the family moved to 91 Tollington Park.
It seems that Maria suffered mental problems which could not be dealt with at home, which may suggest that her aunt Maria was living in to help to look after the children. She was admitted to Islington workhouse on 12 March 1897, having been seen by a magistrate that same day. It was recorded that she had bruises on both legs and arms. Two days later she was sent to Colney Hatch lunatic asylum. The date of her discharge is not known. On 9 January 1899, Maria was admitted to ea href="p525asylum-1899.html">Colney Hatch
