Profile Sweet factory Index for BARRATT

Jane Eliza Barratt was born on 22 May 1853 at 9 Albert Place in Shepherdess Walk, Hoxton New Town, Middesex. She was not baptised until later in life. The census of 1861 shows Elizabeth with her parents and siblings at both 9 and 10 Albert Place in Shepherdess Walk, Hoxton, Middlesex.

By the time the census of 1871 was taken, Jane had moved with her family to 32 Shepherdess Walk and she was now employed as a Confectioner at her father's sweet factory.

On 8 February 1875, Jane married Edgar Drewett at the parish church of St.Leonards Shoreditch. He was the only child of Edgar and Jane Drewett of Guildford and had been living in Charlton in Kent, working as a shop keeper. Jane and Edgar went to live with his parents at 47 High Street in Guildford. Son Edgar was born in 1879 and John in 1879.

The census of 1881 records Jane and Edgar with their children still living with Edgar's parents at 47 High Street, Guildford. That makes three generations of Edgar's in the one house. Jane's husband Edgar is listed as a Toy Shop Keeper, presumably his father's business. Also in the house at the time of the census were Toy Shop Assistants Alice L Butler and Clare M Prescott, thus it is assumed that the shop was part of this property.

Jane was baptised at St.Mary's church in Guildford on 21 February 1886, being 33 years old at that time.

The census of 1891 shows Jane and Edgar are still at 47 High Street in Guildford. Her husband Edgar is now head of the household and on the premises are four Toy Merchant apprentices, Caroline A Marshall, Angelina Lindley, Lucy R Kennett and Grace Lakesleigh. Visiting at that time were Janes sisters Harriett and Ada.

By the time the census was taken in 1901, Jane and Edgar had moved to a house called Meadowbank in Epsom Road, Guildford, Surrey. All three of their children were present as was Jane's nephew, George Osborne Barratt, son of Frank Barratt. There were also two companions in the household, Minnie Flora Brooker and Mabel Woolacombe.

When her father died in 1906, Jane was bequeathed a considerable amount of property to keep or sell plus the income from freehold ground rents held on further propeties.

The 1911 census shows that Jane and Edgar had moved home again and were now living at Helstonleigh in Horndean Road, Emsworth, Hants having retired and bnow living on their own means. Their daughter Rose was still living with her parents. The household also comprised companion Minnie Flora Brooker, parlourmaid Florence White and cook Florence Mabel Revell.

The family were still at the same address in 1921 when the census formwas filled in by Jane, and daughter Rose was still at home. Two companions were also in the house, Celia Elizabeth Corke and Laura Eliza Keeble. The conclusion is that the companions were employed to look after daughter Rose.

Jane's husband Edgar passed away in 1924. Helstonleigh in Horndean Road, Emsworth was still her home when she passed away on 29 March 1934 and was buried at Highgate Cemetery with her husband. She had made her Will a year before her death and Probate was granted to her daughter Rose on 26 May 1934.
