Ernest John Archbald was
born at 27 Camden Cottages in Camden New Town, Middlesex on 9 October 1863, a son of John Renton Archbald and Sophia, née Gilfoy. By the time the census of 1871 was taken, they had moved to 1 Brydges Road in Stratford New Town, Middlesex, but in 1881 they were living at 4 Marlborough Terrace in Holloway Road, Upper Holloway. Ernest was then recorded as being a Pastry Cook.

Ernest can not be found in the census of 1891 and it was said in the family that he went to sea after his father left home. The next recorded event was his marriage to Louisa Yalland in West Ham Register Office on 21 April 1900. She was a daughter of John and Selina Yalland who originated from Devon. Ernest gave his occupation as Ships Cook and his address as 12 Ranelagh Road which was the house of his new wife's parents. It is also noted that his surname was recorded as Archibald and this is how he styled himself thereafter.

Son Ernest John was born on 24 May 1900. The census of 1901 shows them still living with Louisa's parents at Ranelagh Road but strangely, Ernest is described as a General Labourer. Beatrice Louise was born on 6 July 1901, Emily Winifred on 3 September 1903, John on 30 November 1904, Ivy on 5 September 1906. William Frederick was born in 1907 but died two years later. Gladys was born on 1 April 1909.

The census of 1911 shows the family at the same address but now Ernest is head of the household although Louisa's parents are still present. George was born on 27 February 1912, Edith on 7 January 1913, Eleanor on 5 April 1916 and Dorothy on 30 July 1918. All the surviving children went on to marry and all, except Ivy, had children.

Ernest was living at 12 Meanley Road in the Manor Park area of West Ham when he passed away on 1 May 1952. Selina died 11 years later in 1963.
