William Gilfoy Archbald was
born on 23 February 1862 at 129 Great College Street in Camden Town, Islington, the first son of John Renton Archbald and Sophia, née Gilfoy. By 1863, the family were living at 27 Camden Cottages, Camden New Town, Middlesex, but by 1871 they had moved to 1 Brydges Road in Stratford New Town, Middlesex. The census of 1881 shows the family living at 4 Marlborough Terrace in Holloway Road, Upper Holloway. William had taken employment as a Printers Compositor.

William was living at 4 Redhill Place in St.Pancras when he married Lucy Bettles at Christ Church St.Pancras on 24 February 1887. She was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Bettles who had migrated to the St.Pancras area from the Eastern part of the country. Their daughter Maria Sophia was born on 16 March 1888. In 1891 they were living at 182 Stanhope Street near Regents Park in St Pancras, Middx and the household included Lucy's mother Elizabeth and brother Fred. Fred also worked as a Printers Compositor.

The 1901 census shows the family living at 15 Hamilton Street, St.Pancras and Williams sister Edith and brother John had joined them, probably as their mother had died and father had left home to remarry. With the excetion of his brother John who has married, they all were living at 68 Gaisford Street, St.Pancras in 1911.

William was living in the Islington registration district when he died in 1925. It is not known when his wife Lucy passed away.
